Nowadays more and more young people want to work or at least study abroad. In our globalised world, it has become quite common to spend some amount of your life in a different country. Some people leave their country only for a few months or years, while some never come back.
There are many amazing advantages of spending some time abroad. It is a great opportunity to learn new languages, although it at first might be a little scary traveling and living in a country, which speaks a language that you are not yet fluent in, it will really pay off. The best way to learn a new language, is to get thought by native speakers and at the same time being forced to talk as well. While doing that, you can also improve your communication skills. You will have to cross many language barriers and deal with a lot of cultural differences.
Furthermore, there are so many different cultures, religions and traditions, seeing and living them is a great learning experience. But being aware of cultural values and norms is not only interesting and fascinating, but it can also help us understand international issues and conflicts more, or even relate to the different believes of a foreign friend. It is an important skill to be able to shift perspectives and see where someone else is coming from. Trying to understand more and judge less.
It also is a great opportunity to travel the world. It is basically combining business with pleasure, which is a dream for most. Many young people, that haven’t started a family of their own yet, dedicate the first few years of their adult life to traveling and experiencing the world. While doing that you can also form many new relationships with the people around you and maybe even form friendships that will last a lifetime.
On a practical level, it is a great addition to your CV. It helps to stand out of the crowd, not everyone will have as much experience, in this specific field, as you will have after spending years in a different country. Many employers prefer potential employees, who have international experience.
And last but probably one of the most important advantages. Spending some time abroad is an amazing life experience, no matter what you are doing, whether you are studying or working. For most it is an opportunity that comes once in a lifetime. So if you get the chance, just do it.
