Volunteering in St. Roman

by Mirjam Brait, Austria

St. Roman is a small village near Schärding in Upper- Austria. Due to the fact that the village where I am from is very small and has just 1700 citizens, there are not so many possibilities for volunteering. However, if you really want to help somewhere you will find a place to do so.

First of all, all those who like sport have the opportunity to join our soccer club. Since we have teams for 5 year olds to adults, there are, especially for the kids, many coaches needed. So if you are good at playing football and also like to work with children, this would be a great chance for you to volunteer.

Another place where you have a lot of possibilities to help is our local church. Since I live in a small village on the countryside, the church and their traditions are still quite important.
To become a ministrant is the first voluntary work you can do. Many small boys and girls become a ministrant after their first communion in primary school. As a ministrant you assist the priest during the mass about at least once in two weeks.
Maybe you do not want to help directly in the church, but you are still religious and want to work with children? Then the catholic youth group would be great for you. First, you have to take part in a short training course, where they tell you how to arrange an hour and show you a host of great activities, which you can do with the children.  Of course, since it is the catholic youth group, there is always a religious part concluded, but you can also play with the kids outside, go from house to house dressed as the three wise men or be part of the youth group camp in summer.
If you want to volunteer on a more serious point, you can work with Caritas and help with various things and situations.

In case you are an outgoing person who likes to meet other people with different cultures, our local refugees would be happy to get you as their German teacher. As a result of the huge amount of refugees who came to Austria in the last time, in nearly every village is already located a refugee house, so the need for helpers is high. If you are interested in getting to know new people and you want to try out teaching, this would be the right place for you.

One of the most important and demanding voluntary work is being part of the fire brigade. Although I live in such a small village, we have three independent fire brigades in three different parts of St. Roman. Besides the obvious work such as being always prepared to extinguish a fire or come if there is an accident, you also have to attend some events or important days atchurch.

As a conclusion, you can see that there are considerable opportunities to work as a volunteer and help in social life in St. Roman. And as everybody knows, if you join a group or team, you are not just working but you will also get new friends and have a lot of fun.
