VOLUNTEERING

Volunteering is an activity where you provide services free in order to benefit another person or group. When you hear volunteering, the first thing that comes to your mind is an activity like looking after old people, helping orphan children or going to a poor country. There are many volunteering activities; however, not always there are enough people for them. People tend to focus on theirselves and not to think in helping other people. As far as I am concerned, volunteering means cooperate in order to help a community or people in exchange for nothing and not everybody is minded to do it if they haven’t got a reward. What they don’t know is that the best reward is being happy because you were able to give a piece of you helping.

Fortunately, I have had the chance of taking part in volunteering with an association which works with people who have cerebral palsy and I can say that despite being a hard work and a hard experience, it is worth it. It is a very rewarding work where you can learn many things from them. Sometimes we think that we play the role of teachers when in fact, all of us can learn something. After some days with them, the conection which you establish with disables is incredibly strong and the way of seeing them changes completely.

I believe that only because we don’t see what is happening it doesn’t mean it isn’t. Most of the people see the poverty like something that takes place very far from they live. However, it can occcur to anyone and for that reason, I think that it is very important to see it for yourself and a way to do it it’s volunteering. This summer I will have the opportunity of going to India and see the discrimination that some people must face.

In addition, some institutions or NGO couldn’t exist if they wouldn’t have volunteers as they a very important support in that field. As I have said before, there is not many people who want to do this type of work without a salary and the organization haven’t got enough money so as to pay volunteers. There are some people who help building houses for homeless or building hospitals and schools for poor areas. If these people weren’t exist, anybody would have paid for building them. It may surprise you the improvement of the quality of life that these countries can have thanks to volunteers.

From my point of view, this kind of activity should be done for all people at least once in a lifetime because it doesn’t consist only in improving your knowledge, also in improving your experience and being aware of what type of situation must people face in their lifes. These experiences change you for your whole life and it may help you to change your vision of the world.

All in all, the world would work better if all of us were aware of how important is helping other people and that is why volunteering is so essential. We must open our eyes and build a better world because just putting a little bit each one, the change would be incredible.
