Our town - Ronneby:

We live in a town called Ronneby, it’s about 30 000 people who lives in this community. The town is located in the southern part of Sweden. It’s a small town that has some very nice areas. We have a park called Brunnsparken which was awarded a price as the most beautiful park in Sweden 2005. We only have one upper secondary school in Ronneby and that is the school that we attend. Our school …

Concept - What is a ghetto?

We did a literary study about what the word ghetto means, and we found that the word ghetto was founded in the ancient Greece. During the Interwar Years, a ghetto was a place were Jews where living. People talked more about ghettos when the Nazis sent people to the concentration camps. There were about 1200 ghettos. Today`s definition of a ghetto is morelike a slum were socially vulnerable people live because of economic reasons. These type of areas can be found in several places. Examples of big cities that have ghettos are New York (Harlem) and Los Angeles (Comptom). Crime can be common in places like these. According to our previews thoughts we do not have any ghettos in Ronneby. But we have social vulnerable places. These places are different high-rise areas. A high risk area is a place where there are sky scrapers, families with bad economy, high crime rate, unsafe environment etc.

Social inclusion with focus on immigrants - This happens in Ronneby 2016:

Below we will tell you how we work with refugees in our town to get a better integration of refugees. We will also speak about how we work with those people who are socially vulnerable in our city. Below we give some examples on different kinds of project that are going on in our city Ronneby. A – C is about the students. D – G is about students and adults.

  1. Youth center

Here in Ronneby there are nights and days where different cultures and humans meet up at a place called Kulturcentrum. In Kulturcentrum people plays music and some people have cooked traditional food. The thoughts with this is that people are going to have a better picture about different religions and cultures.

  1. Café

On Wednesdays between the hours 18 – 20 a places called Blekinge integrations and- training center opens. In this cafe can immigrants and other people learn the Swedish language while they take a cup of coffee or tea.

  1. Bruket

Then we have a place called ”bruket” and it’s a youth centre where you can be at some evenings in the week, to hang out with other people. This is a place when you have the ability to meet people and do other things. This place also arranges happenings when they play football together and this is voluntary. Those evenings when you play football and do stuff, it’s all the students’ choice.

d. Sports associations

In Ronneby we have plenty of sport associations were people can play things like football, handball and ice hockey. Several of them costs a lot, but those people who has ability to test football or something can do it. Many of the sport association have started up projects with immigrants. They can learn to skate or meet Swedish kids playing soccer.

  1. Gymnasieskolan Knut Hahn– A School For Everyone.

We are student of a school called Gymnasieskolan Knut Hahn. We are about 800 student that are attending out school. This is a school for everyone between 16 – 19 years old who needs an education after high school. Our school is a secondary upper school for boys and girls in the community. After three years in our school you can apply for university. You don’t need to pays to go to upper secondary school in Sweden. Everything you need to pas your education is provided by the municipality (computer, food, books and so on).

The best thing with our school is that everyone has the chance to go here. It doesn’t cost anything attending in our school and in our school everyone has the chance to meet people and learn to know each other. We have open areas where we all study together, a school cafeteria where we all meet and take a snack etcetera. Our school is an area of social inclusion.

Ongoing projects in our school:

  • Choir for all student who wants to attend

  • Immigrants attend preparational education in the same building (social inclusion)

  • All students of the school eat their free lunch in the school cafeteria.

  • Outdoor activities is for everyone in school.

  • Projects where student from different educations and different countries meet.

  1. Start Ronneby

Start Ronneby is an “reception” for newly arrived families (immigrants) with kids in the age of 1-18 years old, that hasn’t been in a Swedish school before. In this place they get to know about the Swedish school system, ho society in Sweden works etcetera.

  1. Red Cross

We all work together to make a difference. Here in Ronneby you can donate clothes on different places like example, at the Red Cross store we have in city. The clothes that you leave there /for free) goes to the immigrants and poor people so they can wear them. A lot of people have donated clothes and shoes to the immigrants in the last sex months.

In summary, this is a selection of our current projects.

What other contributions can Ronneby do?

We think that all of the people here can help each other. We also think that we can help those people who are socially vulnerable with different activities. In the summer it’s easier to find places where you can do activities. In the winter it’s more difficult to find places to be at because all of the sports arenas indoors are busy/booked for example handball and soccer.

We have a suggestion to have outside cinema. We have a very nice park called Brunnsparken and in Brunnsparken there is a place called brunnskvittret. It is a stage and we think that we could use that area for outside cinema and other cultures evenmts.

We can also get a outside gym where people can meet up and talk to each other and maybe be friends. In the same park as brunnskvittret (Brunnsparken) there is plenty of very nice areas where you can have a outside gym. We think that the outside gym could be very useful because not everyone have money to pay for membership at a gym center. Something that is very important is that we have to let everyone into our society and give everyone a chance. We have more similarities than differences. We are all human.

Food festival! Maybe we can have a food festival where people cook and learn about food in different cultures. You can cook together and you can buy food from different countries like in a market place.

Another thing we have to think about here in Ronneby is that we can’t place all of the refugees/immigrants at the same place/neighborhood. It will be better if we include them in different areas in Ronneby among the inhabitants. Then we would all experience each other cultures and integration/inclusion would be easier. Because if you know people, yoy often likes them and care about them.
