‘Social inclusion in our current society’

Social inclusion is about making sure all vulnerable groups in our community can get a safe place and that they can participate in our society. Yet, achieving this goal is complicated and is sometimes even described as impossible. Even though it is a difficult issue and it cannot be solved immediately, it is important that we pay as much attention to it as possible, thus coming closer to our goal. This goal represents the following: A society in which everyone, including the most vulnerable groups in our society (for example, immigrants, handicapped people and the elderly), is offered a safe and active position in our community.

In my opinion, as a society, we should offer as many possibilities for these groups to present themselves more actively. We could, for instance, arrange meetings with one specific vulnerable group which needs most attention at that point in time. At the moment, that group would be refugees. At such a meeting, information would be offered as to how, in this case refugees, could present themselves in our society. This information would ideally be offered by the municipality in which the meeting is arranged, because they have more specific information available as to how the group could change their vulnerable position in that area into a safe position.

Secondly, municipalities in which most vulnerable groups live, could make an effort to promote their help offering. It often occurs that people in vulnerable positions do not know that there are organisations who try to motivate them to participate in society. The municipalities should make sure that they feel at home in their neighbourhood and they know there are people who are available if they ever need social support. In general terms, you could describe the approach in a few steps: 1. Create awareness (let the vulnerable groups know there are people available if they need help) 2. Spread information (about how municipalities want to help the vulnerable groups) 3. Help the vulnerable groups (by for instance support them in keeping their administration up to date).

Countless examples can be given of the third step. The municipality is not the only group who has to act if we want to offer as much effective support as possible. Other groups who could offer great help are for example neighbours and volunteers. They can help by doing grocery shopping for people who have trouble walking, stop by elderly now and then to keep them socially active and by doing some chores in homes of people who cannot do these themselves anymore.

In short, it is important that we pay enough attention to the vulnerable groups in our society and undertake action to be able to offer them a safe and active position in our community with the aid of three simple steps. If we first ensure that the groups are aware of the fact that there are people who want to help them out of their current position, we can move on to step 2. This means that we have to spread information about how we want to improve their situation and and who are willing to offer that help. This is followed by the third and final step: the actual support. Among others, neighbours and volunteers are of great importance here. They can help the vulnerable groups with small things that can make a world of difference for them. The difference it makes for them makes sure they feel more included in the society, which brings us closer to our final goal.
