Meals on Wheels

The daily meal of a person plays a major role to support the physical and mental well-being. Meals on wheels are programmes that deliver meals to individuals who are unable to purchase or prepare their own meals at home. While age and disability may reduce some people's capacity to get out, meals on wheels helps to make it possible to stay in their homes, where most are happiest.
Delivery of nutritious meals, social interaction and regular visits ensure the client's well-being and can help people live their lives they have chosen. Volunteers make sure that the freshly prepared food is delivered reliably. As needed, the meal gets arranged bite-sized.
During the ride the dishes are processed in special vehicles, so that they can be handed over fresh and hot in a thermo box to the receiver. Beside usual main dishes for different taste directions, the menu also includes special food like vegetarian, low-salt, diabetic food or mashed food for customers with difficulty in swallowing. Desserts, cakes, supper and drinks often complement the offer. The dishes are usually chosen from a plan in advance and get delivered daily warmly, often also at weekends and holidays. Alternatively, many suppliers have deep frozen food in the assortment which is ordered for several days and is warmed up at home.
Additionally, the team fulfils other important duties: for example, if a person cannot open the door, it can be checked up quickly and help can be arranged instantly.
The life of several people has already been saved in this manner.
Summarised: Every day a friendly smile, a chat about the weather, a nutritious meal and knowing someone will drop by to say hello, changes the lives of many people.
